STRATEGY

Start with the outcome. Make the choices.

Turn a broad business ambition into a focused product strategy your team can use.

Turn a broad business ambition into a focused product strategy your team can use. Use the example as a starting point, then adapt the steps to your product, team, and evidence.

WHAT YOU’LL LEAVE WITH

A one-page strategy with a target segment, outcome, choices, and assumptions.

Before you begin

  • A business objective and known constraints
  • Customer evidence and a baseline measure
  • Input from design, engineering, and commercial partners

STEP 01

Name the change you want

Replace “launch a dashboard” with the behavior or result it should enable. Example: help new administrators complete their first useful setup without assisted support. State the affected segment and the observation window.

STEP 02

Check the baseline

Define the measure before selecting a target. Record who is included, what event counts, and where the data comes from. If measurement is missing, name that gap instead of inventing a starting number.

STEP 03

Choose where to focus

Identify the audience and problem that deserve attention now. Compare a small number of opportunities against evidence, business relevance, and team capability. Explain what you are choosing not to pursue during this period.

STEP 04

Explain why the approach could work

Link the proposed product change to a user behavior and a business outcome. Example: clearer setup guidance may reduce confusion, increase task completion, and lower assisted onboarding effort. Each link is a hypothesis to examine.

STEP 05

Make assumptions and limits visible

List the assumptions that could invalidate the strategy. Separate technical, customer, and commercial uncertainty. Ask AI to challenge the logic using your supplied evidence, then verify its critique with the team.

STEP 06

Set a review point

Agree on an owner, evidence to collect, and a date or trigger to revisit the choice. A strategy should help the team make new decisions; it should not become a slogan that survives contrary evidence.

MAKE THIS PROMPT YOUR OWN

Using the supplied objective, customer evidence, and constraints, draft a one-page strategy. Separate evidence from assumptions. State the audience, desired outcome, strategic choices, non-goals, and evidence that would change the approach. Identify unsupported links; do not invent metrics.

Check your work

  • Is the desired change observable?
  • Are the strategic choices explicit?
  • Does every claim have evidence or an assumption label?
  • Is there a meaningful review trigger?
